John Moyle Field Day Contest 2007 - VK2BTW

This year the Tamworth Radio Club had a interesting day out for the John Moyle Field Day Contest 2007. We operated under our Club Call of VK2BTW.

The day started at approx 9.15 am at our designated contest site of the Moonbi Lookout (just north of Moonbi) with the contesting party arriving on-site to erect some extremely "high-tech" paraphernalia, here is a list of the equipment we contested with and our efforts for the 6 hour "bash". Contest time for the 6 hour's were 12 noon till 6pm 17 March.

  • Multi-band full-wave loop up at about 15-20ft. Strategically positioned around "convenient" tree's.
  • 8 Element 2M Yagi with "Armstrong" rotator system up at about 20ft.
  • Multiband Collinear many for 80M and 20M.
  • Yaesu FT101E Transceiver with separate speaker.
  • Yaesu FT 847 2m SSB..
  • Icom 7400.
  • Icom 910H for 2m SSB.
  • 3.5KV Petrol Generator.

Antenna's were erected in no time at all it was time to fire up some gear and do some testing.

The site has a 11KV Line running down the side of the hill only 100m away and nothing was heard on the radio's on any bands which was pleasing.  John VK2JH started with a couple of QSO's at approximately 10.30 to get some audio and signal reports and with that we were all pretty excited by the reports and the noise situation.

2m SSB on the other hand was quite for the day and reports from other clubs said the same,, BUT we managed to make 6 good contacts and raised a lot of enthusiasm and idea's for next year. Many people came to the lookout from the public during the day and had a good snoop around at what was going on....... and many questions were asked, just another great way to take Amateur Radio out to the Community.

40M yielded approx 95 contacts and a handful on 80M and 20M each.
